Returning from leave early

Coming back early sounds like it needs no paperwork, and that assumption is how people lose days off their balance. Two things must happen: the days go back, and whoever is covering stops.

Send this when a trip is cut short, a recovery goes faster than expected, or plans fall through and you would rather work. Send it before you walk in, not as you sit down.

What to put in each blank

The first day you will genuinely be working. Do not pick a day you might still travel on.

Count them yourself and say the number. It gets fixed faster when the figure is already there.

Name what you are taking back, so your colleague knows exactly when to stop.

Before you send it

  • Message the person covering you directly. A manager forwarding your note is a slow way to hand work back.
  • Check the days actually returned to your balance a week later. Adjustments made by hand are the ones that get missed.
  • If you came back early from sick leave, say plainly that you are fit to work. It avoids an awkward conversation later.

Do unused leave days come back automatically?

Not always. Some systems need the record shortened by hand, so ask in writing and check your balance afterwards.

Can my employer refuse an early return?

Occasionally, if cover is already booked or a shift has been filled. Ask rather than assume your desk is free.

Should I tell the whole team?

Tell your manager and whoever covered for you. The rest will notice you are back.
