Who is my laptop assigned to?
Each device in the asset register carries one current holder at a time, alongside a device code, a serial number and an availability state. Seeing the machine assigned to you sits in the baseline every account keeps. A laptop with nobody against it reads as available rather than as yours by habit.
An asset register earns its keep by answering one question without a meeting: who has this exact machine right now.
So the holder is a field on the record, not an inference from who used it last. The Assignments tab keeps that history, which means a machine that moved between two people in March can still say which of them held it on the fifteenth.
Two identifiers do different jobs here. The device code is the label your company chose, in the shape HL-DSP-001. The serial is what the manufacturer stamped on the case.
The code is convenient. The serial is decisive. When a repair shop, an insurance form or a lost-property report needs proof, the serial is the field that travels outside the company and still means something.
A register also tracks condition. Each device shows a status of Ready, Under maintenance or Retired, plus a health grade and whether the record has been verified.
Those four fields together answer a question people find harder than ownership: whether the machine somebody is holding should still be in service at all.
A shared device breaks the one-holder model. A meeting-room screen or a spare machine kept for new joiners sits in the register as available rather than assigned, and whoever picks it up is not recorded by the act of picking it up.
Read your own record first and check the serial against the sticker on the machine in front of you. Those two disagreeing is the common fault, and it is far easier to fix before somebody needs the record than after.
