Who can see the asset register?
Seeing your own device is part of the baseline every account keeps, which the product describes as not a permission and not removable. Reading the whole register is separate, and depends on the device permissions an administrator has given to a role. The split is between your own record and everybody else's.
Access here is not one decision. There are two, and they answer to different concerns.
The first is fairness. A person should be able to see what the company says they are holding, because that record can be quoted back at them later. So it sits in the baseline rather than behind a grant somebody might forget to make.
The second is scope. The full register lists serials, health grades and every holder in the company, which is a different kind of visibility and is treated as one.
Between those two sits a middle case most companies hit quickly. A department head who needs their own team's machines and nobody else's. The register filters by department and by holder, so the view narrows even where the permission does not.
That is a filter rather than a boundary, and the difference is worth keeping straight. A narrowed view is a convenience for the person using it. It is not a restriction placed on them.
Custom roles are the tool for the real thing. Where none of the five supplied roles fits, a company can build one and grant the device permissions without the rest of the administrator's reach.
An export leaves the model behind. Anyone who can export the register holds a file the product no longer governs, and a spreadsheet of every serial in the company travels further than a screen does.
Decide who needs the whole register before granting it, and check whether a department filter would serve them instead. Most people asking for the register want one team's worth of it.
