What is a partial day?
Partial is an attendance status for a day where somebody attended, but for materially less than their scheduled shift. Present, absent and partial are three separate states in the status distribution, not two states with a rounding rule. A three-hour appearance on an eight-hour shift is a partial day.
A system with only two states has to round, and both roundings lie.
Round it to present and a Friday that emptied at eleven reads as a full day of cover. Round it to absent and somebody who came in and did real work is recorded as never having turned up.
Keeping the third state makes patterns visible that neither rounding shows. Scattered partial days across a year are life. Nine of them in one team in one month is usually about something other than nine individuals.
The status also carries no judgement, and should not acquire one. A cancelled client visit, a school phone call and a dead laptop all produce the same record.
Reading it well means reading it beside the hours. A day-based count of present days treats a three-hour Tuesday and a nine-hour Tuesday as the same. The working-hours column is what separates them, and it sits on the same row.
Watch the spread rather than the total. Partial days scattered thinly across a year tell you nothing. A cluster in one team in one month is worth a question, and the question is usually about the month rather than the team.
A short day covered by approved leave is a leave day, not a partial one. Mixing the two empties both categories of meaning, because the reporting question behind each is different.
Set a threshold for what counts as materially short and write it down. Anything from two hours to half a shift is used in practice, and an undefined threshold gets applied differently by every reviewer.
