Before you send it

  • Name the mentor. An internship with no named mentor becomes nobody's job.
  • Write three learning goals, not ten. Three get done.
  • Say in the letter that the placement is not a job offer. Students often assume it is.
  • Agree who signs the university form before the placement starts.
  • Where the placement is unpaid, say so on the stipend line rather than leaving it out.

Questions people ask about this letter

Should an internship letter promise a job?

No, and say so in the letter. Students plan around a hint. If a conversion path exists, describe it as a possibility with a decision date rather than a commitment, and keep that sentence separate from the offer itself.

How long should an internship letter be?

One page. The reader is a student and often a university office as well. Dates, mentor, schedule and the certificate promise are what both of them look for, and everything else can wait for the first day.

What does the completion certificate need to say?

The dates, the team, and what the intern actually worked on. A certificate with only dates is worth little on a first CV. Two specific sentences about the work make it useful to the person who earned it.
