Can I check in again after checking out?
Checked out is terminal for the day in the self-serve card. Once the day is closed, the browser card offers no second check-in, and coming back afterwards is handled as a manual punch request that somebody reviews. The restriction is deliberate rather than a gap in the card.
Allowing unlimited reopening turns a simple pair of times into a sequence nobody can verify.
The value of a closed day is that it is finished. A record somebody can reopen at nine in the evening is a record that means slightly less every time it happens.
The request path also puts a person in the loop for exactly the cases that deserve one. Coming back for an evening deployment is a real event with a real reason, and both belong in the record.
So the card handles the ordinary shape of a working day, and anything outside that shape is reviewed rather than silently accepted.
There is a second reason, and it is about the hours figure. A day whose span runs from the first entry to the last exit counts everything in between. Where somebody left at six and came back at nine, that span is wrong by three hours.
Blocks fix that, and blocks are what a reviewed request produces. Two stated periods, each with a start and an end, and a total that leaves out the gap between them.
Keep the reason short and specific. A queue reader deciding on an evening block needs the why in a line. Something naming the release or the client call is enough.
A split working pattern, with two separate blocks in one day, runs the second block through the request path. Each evening block then carries a stated reason and a reviewer, which is what keeps the day's hours right.
Raise the request with the return time and a short reason. An approver reading a queue needs to know why an evening block exists, rather than only that it does.

Ordinary breaks are not checked out and back in. The pair brackets the working day, and whether an unpaid break comes out of the hours is a policy question.
