Employee of the month certificate template
An employee of the month certificate means more when it says exactly what the person did. The template below has the certificate wording, three example citations you can adapt, and a short announcement for the team channel, so the award lands the same day it's decided.
Use it for a monthly award chosen by managers, by peer votes or by both. Print it on card, or paste the wording into a design tool and add your logo. For a thank-you that doesn't need a certificate, a public shoutout in the team channel does the job.

What to put in each blank
- [CITATION]
- Describe one specific thing the person did and what it changed. 'Hard work and dedication' could go on anyone's certificate; a named project can't.
- [NOMINATION QUOTE]
- Use one line from the nomination, with the nominator's permission. Words from a colleague carry more weight than words from HR.
- [CRITERIA]
- List two or three things you reward, such as helping others or delivering under pressure. Publish them before the first award, not after.
- [REPEAT GAP]
- Set a gap such as six months, so the award reaches more of the team and doesn't settle on the same two people.
- [SECOND SIGNATORY NAME]
- Add the person's own manager as a second signature. Recognition from the manager they report to reads as personal.
Before you send it
- Present the certificate in person and post the announcement the same day. A certificate handed over a week later feels like admin.
- Keep a record of every winner, month and reason. After a year, the list shows whether the award is reaching every department.
- Rotate the decision between managers and peer votes if one group keeps choosing from its own team.
- Pair the certificate with something small the person can use, such as an afternoon off, if your policy allows it. State what the award includes when you launch it.

Questions people ask about this letter
What do you write on an employee of the month certificate?
Write the company name, the words 'Employee of the Month', the person's name, role and month, one sentence saying what they did, the date and one or two signatures. The citation sentence is the part people remember, so name the actual work.
How do you choose an employee of the month?
Publish two or three criteria, collect nominations for a set window each month, and have a small panel decide. A rule that someone can win once every six months keeps the award spread across the team.
What should an employee of the month announcement say?
Say who won, their team, the month, and one sentence on what they did, ideally in a colleague's words. Keep it under 80 words and post it where the whole team reads, on the day of the award.
Can I use this certificate for other awards?
Yes. Swap 'Employee of the Month' for the award name, such as Team Player of the Quarter, and keep the citation line. The structure works for any award with a named reason.
