Shift roster
A shift roster is the published plan showing which people cover which shifts across a coming period. It names the person, the date and the shift. Its purpose is to let everybody see the coverage before the period starts rather than after it.
A roster has one job. Prove that for every hour somebody needs to be there, somebody is. That sounds obvious until you sit down with a real roster, a leave calendar and a holiday list, and start crossing off the people who will not be in. Then it gets interesting.
The failures are predictable. A roster built without leave in front of it will schedule somebody who is away. A roster built without holidays will staff a closed day. Both surface on the morning, which is the worst possible time.
Publication matters as much as accuracy. A roster living in one manager's spreadsheet is a plan nobody can act on.
Changes after publication are the third failure. A roster that keeps moving trains people to stop reading it. Then a genuine change gets missed. So freeze it at a stated point. Treat later edits as exceptions, and tell the affected person directly. The frozen copy is also what you compare against when working out why a Tuesday went wrong.

Far enough for people to arrange their lives around it. Two weeks is a common floor. The right answer depends on how much notice your team actually needs.
What is the difference between a roster and a schedule?
They are often used interchangeably. Where teams separate them, the roster is the people plan and the schedule is the work plan. Do not assume that holds elsewhere.
