What is an attendance management system?
An attendance management system is software that records when each person starts and finishes work, compares those times with the shift they were scheduled for, and reports presence, lateness and absence. Punches come from a fingerprint terminal, a browser check-in or a manual entry that a manager approves.
Attendance and time tracking get mixed up constantly, and they measure different things. Attendance asks whether you were there, and when. Time tracking asks what you spent those hours on. A person can be present for eight hours and log six of them to a client project.
Every attendance system rests on three pieces. A way to capture the punch. A shift to judge it against. A route for fixing the punches that went wrong, because some always do: a forgotten check-out, a terminal that was offline, a day spent at a client's office.
The shift is the part buyers skip. Without one, the system can say when someone arrived, but not whether they were late. With a shift assigned, a 10:20 arrival becomes 20 late minutes on a 10:00 start.
